Too Much of a Good Thing

Short Story By Jackie Brewster

Screenshot 2023 11 30 at 09.20.02

โ€œHappy Christmas, Dad.โ€ Molly, laden with bags of gifts, gave her father a hug.

โ€œBefore we go in, I need a quiet word with you about your mother.โ€ Her father glanced nervously over his shoulder.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Molly frowned. Then she heard it, a low mournful braying. โ€œThatโ€™s funny,โ€ she said, โ€œI thought I heard a donkey.โ€

โ€œYou did.โ€ He grimaced. โ€œItโ€™s under the carport.โ€

There, next to the bins, was an old grey donkey regarding them balefully.

โ€œAre you alright there fella?โ€ Molly approached the animal cautiously. โ€œWhatโ€™s it doing here?โ€

โ€œIt just appeared here.โ€ He shrugged helplessly. โ€œAnd now Iโ€™m stuck with it.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t keep a stray donkey.โ€ Molly was horri๏ฌed. โ€œItโ€™s probably escaped from the donkey sanctuary in the village, have you called them?โ€

โ€œI was about to,โ€ he said, shivering in his Christmas jumper. โ€œBut then your mother saw it.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€ Molly had an awful feeling she knew where this was going. Mollyโ€™s mum loved donkeys. Over the years theyโ€™d bought her donkey tea towels, a donkey charm for her bracelet and a donkey teapot. Molly had even bought her, yet to be unwrapped, a donkeyยญshaped cushion for her armchair.

โ€œMum thinks this is her Christmas present,โ€ Molly said ๏ฌ‚atly. โ€œDoesnโ€™t she?โ€

โ€œShe might have got that impression,โ€ her father said sulkily. โ€œAnd she seemed so thrilled, I didnโ€™t want to disappoint her.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll have to tell her sometime,โ€ Molly insisted. โ€œThereโ€™ll be people looking for it.โ€ The donkey brayed softly as though in agreement.

โ€œHow can I?โ€ he protested weakly. โ€œShe said itโ€™s just what sheโ€™s always wanted.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just give her your real Christmas present instead?โ€ Molly suggested. โ€œWhat have you bought her?โ€

โ€œA set of donkey mugs,โ€ he replied, โ€œto match her teapot.โ€

โ€œThat might work,โ€ Molly nodded, though she doubted it. She noticed movement through the kitchen window. โ€œDonโ€™t look now but sheโ€™s watching us.โ€

โ€œIs she coming out?โ€ he asked in alarm, just as Mollyโ€™s mum appeared on the back doorstep.

โ€œHappy Christmas, darling.โ€ She hugged her daughter warmly. โ€œHow do you like my present from your dad?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s very chatty,โ€ Molly said brightly.

โ€œIโ€™m going to call him Gabriel.โ€ Her mother stroked the donkeyโ€™s ears. โ€œAfter the angel.โ€

โ€œVery festive,โ€ Molly agreed. โ€œHe does look hungry though.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s carrots in the shed.โ€ Her mother was forever practical. โ€œBe a love Jim, nip and fetch them?โ€

Mollyโ€™s father sloped off up the garden path, no doubt glad to get away.

โ€œDonโ€™t tell your dad, but Iโ€™ve called the donkey sanctuary,โ€ her mother con๏ฌded quietly. โ€œTheyโ€™re sending someone to fetch him now.โ€

โ€œYou knew it wasnโ€™t your Christmas gift?โ€ Molly felt lost. โ€œWhy pretend?โ€

โ€œI saw your father wrapping those awful mugs.โ€ Her mother laughed. โ€œSo I thought Iโ€™d wind him up a bit.โ€

โ€œAwful?โ€ Molly was shocked. โ€œBut you love donkeys!โ€

โ€œYou know, you can have too much of a good thing.โ€ Her mother raised an eyebrow. โ€œHopefully no one will dare buy me another donkeyยญ-themed present after this.โ€
