The Remorse of the Aristocracy

Short Story By Jackie Brewster

Screenshot 2023 07 21 at 09.39.37

โ€œI canโ€™t allow you to eat that in here,โ€ Violet said curtly to the lady who had just stepped through the door, โ€œbecause of the sculpture.โ€

Apart from the shrieks of children down by the lake, and the whistling of Ted the porter in the courtyard, her afternoon volunteering in the Coach House Gallery had been pleasantly undisturbed until now.

The lady looked longingly at the choc ice she was holding. โ€œI just need to cool down for a minute,โ€ she said, and then, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, what sculpture?โ€

โ€œThis, obviously.โ€ Violet pointed to the installation by the hallโ€™s artist in residence that filled half the room. The lady looked at the sculpture frowning.

โ€œWhatโ€™s it called?โ€ she asked. โ€œThereโ€™s no sign on it.โ€
โ€œNot yet, itโ€™s brand new.โ€ Violet smiled patronisingly. โ€œItโ€™s called โ€˜The Remorse of the Aristocracyโ€™.โ€

The Coach House Gallery, while sounding very grand was just a converted stable barn, and prone to pigeons roosting in the rafters.

Despite that, it was the coolest place to be on such a hot day, and probably the only place to successfully eat a choc ice before it melted. However, Violetโ€™s role was to protect the artwork from sticky ๏ฌngers and she took that role very seriously.

The lady walked around the sculpture slowly and sniffed. โ€œThis just looks like a pile of old canteen chairs.โ€

โ€œThe artistโ€™s saying something important about the aristocracy.โ€ What Violet most liked about art was telling visitors what to think about it, โ€œAnd their value in todayโ€™s society.โ€ The lady raised her eyebrows. A drip of melted ice cream fell from her choc ice.

โ€œYou really need to take that outside, madam,โ€ Violet said. โ€œYouโ€™re making a mess.โ€

โ€œBut the floor is rather dirty already,โ€ the lady observed. As though to prove her point a flurry of pigeon feathers fell from above.
โ€œThis is a very valuable sculpture,โ€ Violet said, โ€œwe canโ€™t have melted ice cream on it.โ€

โ€œBut some of the chairs in this soยญcalled sculpture have tea stains on them,โ€ the lady said, and pointed, โ€œand that oneโ€™s got a lump of chewing gum under the seat.โ€
โ€œIf it hasโ€ฆโ€ Violet hadnโ€™t noticed the chewing gum before, and this lady was starting to annoy her, โ€œitโ€™s because the artist intended it. What he didnโ€™t intend was for it to be covered in choc ice.โ€

โ€œI can hardly see how itโ€™s going to make much difference,โ€ the lady said. โ€œWell, that just goes to show what you know about art,โ€ Violet replied tartly. Honestly, sometimes she thought the hall would run a lot more smoothly with no visitors at all. With his trademark whistle, Ted backed into the gallery wheeling a sack trolley.

โ€œAfternoon ladies,โ€ he said, and began dismantling the sculpture. โ€œWhat on earth are you doing?โ€ Violet cried, โ€œThe artist will go spare if he sees you meddling with that.โ€
โ€œHe certainly will if I donโ€™t get this lot shifted before five,โ€ Ted said, grunting over a pair of particularly tangled chairs, โ€œhe needs this space cleared.โ€

โ€œBut this is โ€˜The Remorse of the Aristocracyโ€™!โ€ Violet was mortified.

โ€œNo duck, this is just a pile of old canteen chairs for the skip.โ€ Ted looked up and snorted, โ€œIf youโ€™re on about the new sculpture, itโ€™s coming later.โ€ He wiped the sweat from his forehead. โ€œThereโ€™s been a delay, what with the heat.โ€

The lady had been watching from the back of the gallery, a triumphant smile forming on her face.
โ€œThen I donโ€™t suppose anyone would mind,โ€ she took a large bite out of her choc ice, โ€œif I eat this in here after all.โ€
