Peripheral neuropathy (or ‘pins and needles’) is commonly seen in the clinic.

This affects either hands or feet and in the case of musculoskeletal problems often stems from compression of nervous tissue. Symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness, heightened sensitivity, and changes in the ability to feel vibrations and touch.
Examples of causes of peripheral neuropathy include a herniated (bulging) disc in the low back or neck, carpal tunnel syndrome from compression of the Median nerve of the wrist, pressure from a restrictive brace or cast, direct trauma or arthritis. Peripheral neuropathy can also have a ‘systemic’ origin (so arise from chemical disturbances in the body) such as diabetes, vitamin B deficiencies, toxins, drugs and infections like shingles. An osteopath will take a thorough ‘case history’ to determine whether your ‘peripheral neuropathy’ follows a familiar musculoskeletal pattern. Where it does not, we encourage patients to seek further support and investigation through their GP or nurse.
