The coccyx is a triangular-shaped bone located at the base of the spine. It is possible to fracture, dislocate or bruise the bone. Coccyx injuries occur more commonly in women because the pelvis is wider (so the coccyx is more exposed).

The most common way to break or fracture the coccyx is by falling down steps, although slipping on ice is another common cause (especially at this time of year!) Fractures can
also occur during childbirth. A coccyx fracture needs to be determined by an x-ray, as bone bruising can also occur and feel just as painful.
Coccyx injuries can be slow to heal but can usually be easily managed by using conservave treatment and advice. A wedge-shaped cushion can help offload the pressure on the coccyx; exercises for the low back and pelvic floor exercises can help and the application of ice and heat can also be very helpful. Coccyx factures generally heal within 8 to 12 weeks.
