Leicester Print Workshop is delighted to present a selection of prints by the late Leicester artist Roy Bizley. These works have been selected from a collection of prints produced throughout his career, which have been recently donated to LPW by the artist’s family.
The exhibition, staged over two venues, brings together two aspects of Bizley’s work, the Icelandic landscapes that inspired so much of his work, and a series of prints which explore his process of creating a print. The exhibition follows on from a successful show of Bizley’s political woodcuts at Leicester Print Workshop in 2016.
Background
Leicester based Artist and Educator Roy Bizley (1930-1999) trained at Swindon School of Art and Slade School of Art. There he was a contemporary of The Curwen’s Stanley Jones and Raymond Briggs. As well as developing his painting and lithography skills, Roy also became an art teacher, returning to Swindon to teach at the School of Art in 1960 after 4 years working and teaching in Melbourne, Australia.
In 1964 Roy moved to Leicester and began a teaching post at Leicester Polytechnic. Here he established the Printmaking Department in what would later become De Montfort University. At DMU he taught many artists, including Angela Harding, Brad Faine, Dale Devereux Barker and Dr. Tim O’Riley. He is remembered with fondness and gratitude for his commitment to the process, personal inspiration and encouragement.
