Last weekend a Leicester roller derby team skated over 1000km in 6 hours to raise funds for league costs such as equipment, coaching and long haul travel.
Instead of their usual training session, the Leicestershire Dolly Rockit Rollers took on the challenge to skate as many laps of New College’s 1km cycle track in Leicester.
With a weekend tournament in Hull coming up in October and a game overseas in Vienna later in November, the local roller derby team decided to think of a unique way to raise funds and held a sponsored skate on Sunday 15 September.
Each team member set themselves a target of how many kilometres they were going to skate and asked friends and family to sponsor.
With such a mix of skating experience and ability on the day, targets for each individual skater ranged from 20km to 60km.
In total the team skated a total of 1116 km, which is the equivalent of skating from Leicester to Austria. The Dollies are still collecting sponsorship, but the current total of funds raised for the day is over a thousand pounds.
Each skater got a medal for taking part in the gruelling challenge, but special medals went to Clare Foxon who skated the furthest distance of 78km and Faye Coward for getting to 60k the fastest and averaging 3 minute kilometres.
Thanks to everyone who came on the day to offer support and cheer on the Dollies, including other local skaters who helped with the total of laps and sports massage therapist Rae Lloyd, who gave free massages to the skaters on the day.
If you would like to support the local team, the Dollies are still taking donations and would appreciate any amount, no matter how small. Donations can be made via PayPal at www.paypal.me/LDRR or visit the website www.dollyrockitrollers.co.uk.
