What Does It Mean for Our Community?
Improving access to GP services remains one of my top priorities locally. I’ve been working with local GPs and the NHS to help practises get the premises they need and deliver the care our community deserves. Our GP surgeries are delivering more appointments, making it easier to see your doctor. Waiting lists are falling. But more appointments alone will not solve the growing demands on our NHS. Care must evolve to focus more on prevention and into the community as our population ages. This is exactly what the NHS 10 Year Plan aims to achieve.
The plan focuses on three key shifts: from hospital to community care, from analogue to digital systems, and from treating sickness to preventing illness. This means more care delivered closer to home, often through community teams or, in due course, the new, successfully piloted Neighbourhood Health Centres.
To help drive this locally, I convened a roundtable with our GP partners and leaders to discuss how best to implement these changes. We are working to expand community care and digital services, which will take pressure off hospitals and primary care – such as supporting Loughborough Urgent Care Centre who deliver exemplary 111 services for our community, reducing A&E visits and even GP appointments.

The 10 Year Plan also emphasises prevention. By focusing on healthier lifestyles and early intervention, we can reduce illness and improve quality of life. I am championing initiatives that encourage everyone to care for each other. Whether through better health checks, support for those with long-term conditions, or
promoting digital tools that put health management in people’s hands.
Together, these changes mean faster, more personalised care for you and your family delivered within the community. Our local NHS is evolving to meet today’s challenges and create a healthier future for all of us.
