Dr. Jeevun Sandher, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Loughborough, Shepshed, and the Villages
Spring has arrived and the sun is shining a little more. Brighter, warmer days are here.
I’d love to say that, as it’s getting warmer, it’s a chance to turn the heating off and save on the bills. But I know how many of you barely turned the heating on all winter.
I know how hard things are right now. The bills, rents, and mortgages keep going up while our wages aren’t rising.
My first priority is to get more money in your pocket. That’s why I became an Economist and it’s why I’m running to be your MP.
To get more cash in your pocket, a Labour government will invest in (green) industries, skills, and infrastructure. That’s why I brought Darren Jones, Labour’s Deputy Chancellor, to visit us and see our brilliant green industries. If we are elected, Darren will be helping to make decisions on how a Labour government will invest.
I’m working to bring investment here, which will make us all better off. Building green industrial facilities, for example, puts money into the pockets of local builders. Local builders use the money they earn to spend in local shops and businesses and it eventually ends up in your pocket. What is true for building is true for a whole range of industries. From pipes to plumbing, bringing investment here makes us all better off.
On top of that, we’ll invest in skills through, for example, technical colleges. More local skills mean higher wages and more local spending. To help businesses expand, we’ll build local infrastructure. I live near the old Brush factory in Loughborough. Companies can’t move into the site because they can’t get the electricity grid
connections they need. That is why the Labour government will reform planning laws to get Britain building again. Local companies expanding means more spending here.
We know all this can work because we’re seeing the benefits of Biden’s investment in (green) industries, skills, and infrastructure in the United States. American wages are over $800 higher than before COVID and their economy is growing eight times faster than ours.
We can build a brighter, greener, more prosperous future. This is the year we can start to build it.
Dr. Jeevun Sandher
