The Bucket of Damsons

Short Story By Jackie Brewster

Screenshot 2023 10 09 at 17.00.29

The presence of a muddy bike abandoned on the grass verge made Marion suspect that the creature perched high in the branches of her damson tree was no bird.

โ€œYouโ€™d better not be scrumping,โ€ Marion said, wrapping her pashmina tightly around her shoulders, โ€œIโ€™ll be having a word with your mother.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know her.โ€ A girl, no older than twelve, peered down through the foliage. Sheโ€™d come prepared. A large bucket swung from her juice-ยญstained hand.

โ€œYouโ€™re trespassing,โ€ Marion said with annoyance. โ€œThat tree borders my property. All the fruit belongs to me.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t own a tree,โ€ the girl said, โ€œitโ€™s a living thing.โ€

โ€œWhat utter nonsense,โ€ Marion said crossly. โ€œOf course you can.โ€
The girl looked dubious.

โ€œLast year all the plums just fell into the lane and got ruined,โ€ the girl said. โ€œThatโ€™s a waste, and weโ€™re taught not to waste food.โ€

Marion felt a twinge of guilt. Last year she had intended to pick the damsons, but it meant getting the step ladder out of the garage and sheโ€™d never got round to it.
โ€œTheyโ€™re not plums,โ€ she said ๏ฌrmly, โ€œtheyโ€™re damsons.โ€

โ€œThey taste like plums,โ€ the girl replied tartly.

โ€œSo youโ€™ve been eating them as well?โ€ Marion asked.

โ€œJust the one,โ€ the girl grinned. โ€œIt was juicy.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you climb down with your bucket?โ€ Marion said cunningly, โ€œAnd I will take my share from what youโ€™ve picked. The rest you can keep as a pickerโ€™s fee.โ€ The girl considered this for a moment.

โ€œHow about,โ€ she replied, โ€œI take my share from the bucket and you get whatโ€™s left instead?โ€

โ€œCertainly not,โ€ said Marion. This child really had some cheek.

โ€œDonโ€™t forget those are my damsons and you are a thief.โ€

โ€œIf you cared about them youโ€™d have picked them already,โ€ the girl said. โ€œIโ€™m the one whoโ€™s taken all the risks.โ€

โ€œBut you didnโ€™t ask permission,โ€ Marion said, outraged.

There was a steely look in the girlโ€™s eye. Then she smiled.

โ€œHow about we play a game?โ€ she said. โ€œI tip this bucket and whatever you catch you keep, and whatever falls on the ground I keep.โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€™ve got nothing to catch them in,โ€ Marion said, annoyed. She didnโ€™t much like games.

โ€œThen nip into your house for a bowl.โ€ The girl smiled sweetly.

โ€œAs big as you like.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t trust you,โ€ Marion said, โ€œthe minute Iโ€™m gone youโ€™ll be off with the lot.โ€ The girl looked offended.

โ€œBrownieโ€™s honour I would not,โ€ she said. โ€œAlright then, why not catch them in your scarf?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a scarf, itโ€™s a pashmina,โ€ Marion said, then realised what a good idea that was. The girl clearly wasnโ€™t aware just how big her pashmina was. If she held it taut she could catch every damson, and the annoying child would end up with none at all.

โ€œAlright then,โ€ Marion agreed, โ€œyouโ€™ve got yourself a deal.โ€ She unfolded the length of fabric.

โ€œNot fair!โ€ the girl cried. โ€œItโ€™s massive.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t back out now,โ€ Marion said, pleased that the balance of power had been redressed.

โ€œAlright,โ€ the girl conceded reluctantly, โ€œget ready then.โ€

Marion squinted up into the branches of the tree with the pashmina outstretched like a ๏ฌremanโ€™s net. The girl wedged herself against a branch and held up the bucket. Slowly it began to tip. Marion braced herself.

First there was a strange rattling sound, then a slurry of wet damson stones rained down upon her.

โ€œYou know how I said Iโ€™d only eaten one?โ€ the girl laughed, swinging nimbly down with her empty bucket. โ€œWell, I might have been lying.โ€
